Scope and Content Aerial view of Holyrood Road and Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, from south-west On the right side of Holyrood Road, the demolished remains of the Meadow Flat gas holder station can be seen, along with the circular areas in which the gas cylinders once stood. On the other side of Holyrood Road, there are the buildings of Queensberry House Hospital and two breweries: the Holyrood Brewery and Abbey Brewery. At the date of this photograph, most of the brewery buildings were owned by William Younger & Co. This area is virtually unrecognisable today: the headquarters of 'The Scotsman' newspaper and 'Our Dynamic Earth' visitor attraction stand on the site of the gas holder station. Across the road is the site of the Scottish Parliament, built around the 17th-century core of Queensberry House. Older brewery buildings, most notably a clock-tower, have been retained as parts of developments which include shops, restaurants, hotels and offices. This photograph, taken in 1994, and centred on Holyrood Palace, shows the Holyrood area prior to the substantial regeneration project that transformed it a few years later. It is around Holyrood Road, seen leading from the bottom left-hand corner of the photograph up to the palace, that most of the development has occurred. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
