Scope and Content Cranes, Irvine Harbour, Ayrshire The harbour at Irvine is a rivermouth one, with quays along the south bank of the river Irvine at its confluence with the river Garnock. Important in the 19th century, by 1977 there was only one commercially active wharf. This view shows the two wharfside cranes in use in 1977. On the left is a rail-mounted crane by Alexander Chaplin and Co, Glasgow, and on the right a tracked crane by Smith Rodley of Leeds. Both were electrically powered. The wharf was reconstructed as part of harbourside improvements undertaken by Irvine New Town Development Corporation in the early 1990s. The Chaplin crane was repaired and remains as a feature on the quayside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
