Scope and Content Craigellachie Bridge, Morayshire This cast-iron arch bridge was designed to carry a road over the river Spey. The engineer was Thomas Telford, and the ironwork was cast at Plas Kynaston, Ruabon, in North Wales, by William Hazledine. This view shows the arch from below. with its four ribs. Note the castellated towers flanking the abutment. The approach road, to the right, is cut into the rock outcrop - Craig Ellachie - which gave its name to the bridge. Cast iron construction was chosen for this bridge so that it could be constructed without any intermediate piers, It was assembled without any centring, by supporting the sections, as they were put together, by cables from the ends.
