Scope and Content Craigellachie Bridge, Morayshire This cast-iron arch bridge was designed to carry a road over the river Spey. The engineer was Thomas Telford, and the ironwork was cast at Plas Kynaston, Ruabon, in North Wales, by William Hazledine. This view shows the arch from the south east. The bridge has four ribs, and Telford's characteristic diamond pattern spandrels. The railings were replaced in the early 1960s, when the bridge was overhauled. Cast iron construction was chosen for this bridge so that it could be constructed without any intermediate piers, It was assembled without any centring, by supporting the sections, as they were put together, by cables from the ends.
