Scope and Content Former Perth Waterworks building, Perthshire This was built as a pumping station to supply mains water to Perth, and was designed by Adam Anderson. It has a circular cast-iron tank on the roof, with a domed top. To the west is a rectangular section which presumably housed the pumping engine. This view shows the building from the east. Note the elaborate classical treatment, not only of the building itself, but also of the boilerhouse chimney. The whole complex is pretending to be something it is not. The complex continued as a pumping station until the mid 20th century, with a larger steam engine in an extension. This was scrapped when the building was converted to a visitor centre in the early 1970s. It is now an art gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
