Scope and Content South Esk Viaduct, Montrose, Angus This viaduct was constructed for the North British Railway as part of the line from Arbroath to Kinnaber Junction, north of Montrose, built in connection with the opening of the Tay Bridge. It is built of wrought-iron, and has 14 spans. This view shows the viaduct from the south east. The lattice trusses, with their hog-back profiles are supported on riveted iron cylindrical piers. The viaduct carries a single line of railway. The line of which this was a part allowed the North British Railway to reach Aberdeen. This viaduct was rebuilt before opening, as it was similar in construction to the first Tay Bridge, and designed by the same engineer, Thomas Bouch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
