Scope and Content The Tolbooth, High Street, Edinburgh The Edinburgh Tolbooth was built in the late 14th century on the south side of the High Street next to St Giles' Cathedral. It provided accommodation for the town council, the Law Courts and Parliament. From the late 15th century it included a prison. A good idea of the Tolbooth building may be gained from contemporary drawings like this. It comprised two adjoining blocks. The earliest block, to the right next to St Giles, was known as the Bell-House and built of polished ashlar. Although a new building was provided in the 16th century, the Tolbooth survived as a common prison till 1817. When it was demolished, Sir Walter Scott took various souvenirs such as a nail-studded oak door, which he housed at his home at Abbotsford. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
