Scope and Content White Horse Close, Canongate, Edinburgh White Horse Close lies to the bottom of the Canongate. The date on the window gable is thought to refer to an earlier inn, as the main development took place in the early 17th century when a court, hayloft and houses, as well as an inn, were built. The close takes its name from Mary Queen of Scots' white palfrey. In the 18th century the inn became the terminus for the Edinburgh to London stagecoach. The journey took eight days and travellers were allowed 14lbs of luggage. White Horse Close became rather decayed, but it was restored as modern housing in the 1960s. It remains, however, one of the most picturesque spots of the Royal Mile and is much visited and photographed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
