Scope and Content Inscribed stone known as 'The Catstane', Kirkliston, West Lothian Until the 7th century AD the Lothians were ruled by the Votadini, a native British tribe. Remains of their fort at Edinburgh Castle have been found in excavations. Expansion by the Angles of Northumbria in the 7th century ended British rule. Chalked out for clarity, the Latin inscription reads: IN OC T VLO IAC T VETTA F VICTR. Translations vary, but one reading might be: In this tomb lies Vetta, daughter of Victricius. The style of the letters suggests a date of late 5th or early 6th century. Excavation around the stone has revealed that it was the focus for a cemetery of long cist burials used by Christianised Britons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
