Scope and Content Inscribed stone known as 'The Catstane', Kirkliston, West Lothian Antiquarian sketches and early descriptions of monuments are valuable to historians and archaeologists. Many of the sites described by antiquarians have subsequently been destroyed and their accounts are the only record of the monuments. An excavation at the base of the stone was made in 1860, by Professor James Young Simpson. This is one of a number of sketches made by James Drummond a well-known Scottish draughtsman and scholar. Excavation around the stone has revealed that it was the focus for a cemetery of long cist burials used by Christianised Britons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
