Scope and Content Torphichen Preceptory, West Lothian In 1099 Gerard de Saxo founded the Order of St John of Jerusalem, The Knights Hospitallers from the Benedictine monks tending the hospital in the city. Torphichen was their only seat in Scotland. This plan shows all that remains of the Preceptory today. The crossing of the church and the north and south transepts date to the 12th century but were rebuilt and heightened in the 15th century. Above the crossing is a 13th-century bell chamber. For a time after the Reformation the transepts and tower were used as the local court-house with the top floor as a gaol. The nave was used as the parish kirk until 1756 when the present building replaced it. The remainder of the complex was razed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
