Scope and Content Banquet for George IV in Parliament Hall, Parliament House, Parliament Square, Edinburgh Parliament Hall was built by Sir James Murray in 1639. Until 1707, it was the meeting place of the Scottish Parliament. For nearly 200 years it served as the public hall for the city, and at present is a meeting place for lawyers and those they represent. The drawing by W H Lizars shows Parliament Hall during a banquet for George IV on the 24th of August, 1822. George IV's visit to Edinburgh in 1822 was the first by a reigning monarch since Charles II. 300 guests from the Scottish society attended a banquet in Parliament Hall where dishes included the traditional delicacies of hodge-podge, haggis and sheep's heid.
