The interior has been completely altered since Playfair's day. In 1909-11 a new staircase and a set of upper-level galleries, in a simple Classical style, were added. There are now six large rooms for exhibitions. Every spring the Royal Scottish Academy mounts a large exhibition of new paintings, sculptures, and architectural models and drawings, as well as special exhibitions during the Edinburgh Festival.
