Scope and Content Contract drawing for the Scott Monument, East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, by the architect, George Meikle Kemp The Scott Monument, designed by George Meikle Kemp, was completed in 1844 at a cost of £16,000. It commemorates Sir Walter Scott, Edinburgh's greatest publicist and author of the Waverley Novels, who died at Abbotsford in 1832. George Meikle Kemp's Scott Monument is 61m high, with an inner stairway leading to a balcony at the top. Some features of the elaborate Gothic structure have been borrowed or adapted from Rheims, Rouen, Antwerp, and other continental sources. George Meikle Kemp (1795-1844) worked in William Burn's office before establishing himself as an architect. He won the competition in 1836 for a Gothic memorial to Sir Walter Scott but died in a drowning accident in 1844 before the work was completed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
