Scope and Content Royal College of Physicians, Nos 9-10 Queen Street, Edinburgh Early 20th-century view The Royal College of Physicians, designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1844, was built on the former site of a house in Queen Street acquired by the college in the previous year, after their old hall in George Street was demolished in 1843. The three-storeyed building, set forward from its neighbours, has a central doorway framed by a portico supporting statues of Hippocrates, Asclepius, and Hygeia carved by A Handyside Ritchie. Above the blind attic storey is a cornice set with lion masks. The Physicians' Hall in George Street, designed by James Craig in 1775, was a disappointment to the Royal College of Physicians who found 'its internal arrangements were not so convenient'. It was demolished in 1843. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
