Scope and Content View of Edinburgh from the Castle ramparts This view shows Edinburgh not long after the construction of the New Town. Princes Street still comprises an uninterrupted row, largely of private houses, and only the Royal Scottish Academy has been built on The Mound. The valley between the Old and New Towns is spanned by North Bridge, and in the distance lies Calton Hill. On its summit may be seen the two Monuments as well as the Observatory buildings. Out to sea there is much shipping in the Leith Roads. When this illustration was drawn, Mons Meg had recently been returned to the castle from London. At this time she sat outside, on a disused battery looking out to the Forth, though she has now been moved inside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
