Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket Edinburgh Castle sits high above the Grassmarket, on the Castle Rock. The semicircular structure of the Half-Moon Battery, built in the 1570s, may be seen to the right with the Great Hall and Palace to its left. For many years the Grassmarket was the site of one of Edinburgh's main markets. The charter was granted in 1477 and weekly sales took place till 1911. This picture gives a good idea of the bustle that took place as traders and townsfolk jostled for space. At other times the Grassmarket was a more sombre place. It was the site of the public gallows till 1784. Many common criminals died in the public executions here, but it is best known for the religious executions of Covenanters between 1661-88.
