East Loch Tarbert, Ferry Pier View from S

SC 461621

Description East Loch Tarbert, Ferry Pier View from S

Date 24/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461621

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Pier, East Loch Tarbert, Harris, Inverness-shire This is a substantial concrete piled structure, the terminal for ferry services to and from Harris. This view shows the pier from the south, with the community which has grown up round it. In the foreground are the ridges and furrows of abandoned 'lazy bed' cultivation, a form of spade husbandry still practised in Harris in the 1970s. Tarbert means an isthmus, and here Harris is nearly split in two by the inlets of the sea known as East and West Loch Tarbert, giving the location importance as a focus for trade.
