Scope and Content White Horse Close, Canongate, Edinburgh White Horse Close lies to the bottom of the Canongate. The buildings were built in the early 17th century to replace an earlier inn. They take their name from Mary Queen of Scots' white palfrey. The 17th-century development also included an inn and this became the terminus for the Edinburgh to London stagecoach. The journey took eight days and travellers were allowed 14lbs of luggage. White Horse Close was restored as modern housing in the 1960s. It remains, however, one of the most picturesque spots of the Royal Mile and is much visited and photographed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
