Scope and Content Morrison's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Morrison's Close is typical of the old closes and housing of the Old Town of Edinburgh. The buildings in this illustration have long since been demolished. The closes were used by a variety of merchants and tradespeople as well as for ordinary family homes. Originally reflecting the wealth of the centre of the city, many fell into decay and disrepair with a consequent effect on those who lived there. The Close is named after John Morrison, a merchant, who lived there in the early 18th century. The core of the buildings was stone, but many had timber extensions, which made the streets narrower and darker, but provided more space for those living above. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
