Scope and Content Kirkwall Harbour, Orkney This harbour consists of a long, irregularly-shaped east pier, with a broad head, and an easterly stub, and a shorter west pier. Together they form a basin used by small craft; larger vessels use the east pier. This view shows the outer face of the west pier, on the right, with the head of the east pier beyond. The central ship at the pierhead is the MV Orcadia, which at that time was the vessel serving the north isles of Orkney, before vehicular ferries came in Since 1976 extensive works have been carried out to improve the working of the harbour, and vehicular ferries have been introduced. The ramp for the Shapinsay ferry has been built on the section of beach adjacent to the west pier. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
