Scope and Content Early 19th century view of Princes Street looking west from General Register House, Edinburgh Princes Street, 'the most magnificent esplanade in Europe', was part of James Craig's simple plan for a New Town for Edinburgh in 1767: George Street, with a square at each end, was flanked by Princes Street to the south, and Queen Street to the north. Princes Street was originally a long row of plain terraced houses on the north side whose residents had exclusive use of gardens on the south side. The houses had an uninterrupted view across the gardens to the High Street in the Old Town and the Castle. At the start of building the New Town, the Nor' Loch was drained and replaced with formal gardens, laid out by James Skene, for the private use of the Princes Street residents. Later, through public agitation, they were made open to all. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
