Scope and Content Charlestown Harbour, Fife This harbour is formed by four piers. The inner pair were built c1770 though the western one was rebuilt c1840. The outer piers were added later in the 19th century. This view shows the entrance to the inner harbour, with the end of the east pier of c1770 on the left, and the coal-shipment pier of c1840 on the right. The west breakwater pier with its wooden light house is in the background. The harbour was originally formed for shipping lime from the kilns on the landward side, but was later used for coal shipment. In the inter-war and post war years it was used for shipbreaking, Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
