Keir Mill View from WNW

SC 450852

Description Keir Mill View from WNW

Date 29/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450852

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Keir Mill, Dumfriesshire This mill, on a rectangular plan, had a 3-storey main range, with a two-storey granary and kiln at one end. By 1974all the machinery, including the wheel, had been removed, except for most of the wooden pit wheel, a rare survival. This view shows the decaying mill, with the kiln block built into a bank, so that grain could be taken into the mill at kiln-floor level. The square louvered ventilator marks the site of the kiln. This was a typical rural corn mill. Like many such, it has now been converted into a house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
