Scope and Content St Mary's Church, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire St Mary's is a rectangular church in the late Romanesque style known as Transitional and probably dates to around 1200. Remodelled in the early 16th century, it was used until 1811 when a new church was built, and its roof and woodwork were sold. This opening is a 'stoup' or holy water basin which is set into the internal wall next to the main doorway. The stoup contained consecrated, or holy, water into which the parishioners would dip their fingers before they made the sign of the cross. The typical plan-form for Scottish parish churches - a narrow rectangle with low walls and one roof running from the east to the west gable - was laid in the 13th century and was used for the next 600 years. St Mary's is a good example of this plan-form. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
