Scope and Content Main south doorway, St Mary's Church, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire St Mary's is a rectangular church in the late Romanesque style known as Transitional and probably dates to around 1200. Remodelled in the early 16th century, it was used until 1811 when a new church was built, and its roof and woodwork were sold. The main doorway is a fine example of Transitional style. A hood moulding, decorated with 'dogtooth' carvings, surrounds the plain round-headed mouldings. The tops, or capitals, of the columns are decorated with stylised foliage motifs. Elaborate decoration was often used as part of the external treatment of a medieval church to draw the eye to areas of functional importance such as the doorway.
