Scope and Content St Mary's Church, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire St Mary's is a rectangular church in the late Romanesque style known as Transitional and probably dates to around 1200. Remodelled in the early 16th century, it was used until 1811 when a new church was built, and its roof and woodwork were sold. At the left, the original doorway can be seen. It is a fine example of Transitional style, a high point of Scottish medieval stone-mason work. The doorway next to it was inserted in 1557. The belfry on the west gable (left) dates to 1664. The typical plan-form for Scottish parish churches - a narrow rectangle with low walls and one roof running from the east to the west gable - was laid in the 13th century and was used for the next 600 years. St Mary's is a good example of this plan-form. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
