Scope and Content Troon Harbour, Ayrshire Troon Harbour was developed from 1808 by the third Duke of Portland for shipping coal from collieries inland. Until the end of the 19th century most of this trade was carried on in sailing vessels, most of which came in with earth ballast. This view shows the main inner basin of the harbour, with the long east pier in the background. The cranes on the pier had latterly been used for shipbreaking. This basin was converted into a yacht marina shortly after this photograph was taken. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
