Scope and Content Monastic settlement, Canna, Inverness-shire The remains of an early Christian monastic settlement (7th century) exist at Sgor nam Ban-naomha (Cliff of the Holy Women). The isolated site is on a rock-platform below steep scree slopes and accessible by sea only in fine weather. The oval-shaped site is surrounded by the remains of a 2m-thick wall which encloses circular huts and a sophisticated water-supply system with a well-house and latrine. The chapel beyond the enclosure may have replaced a small one of timber within it. It may have been inhabited by hermits, who were probably attached to a larger monastery on fertile ground about 3km to the west. The theme of isolation, both spiritual and physical, is common in 'Saint's Lives' and other Early Christian literature. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
