Scope and Content Excavation at The Catstane, Kirkliston, Midlothian Towards the top edge of the image a boulder can be seen. Known as the Catstane it is thought to be an Early Christian tombstone commemorating Vetta, daughter of Victricius and dating to late 5th/early 6th century. An excavation to the east and south-east of the Catstane has revealed the site of a possible Early Christian cemetery. Four rows of long cists were found, the graves being constructed of sandstone and shale. The bones were in poor condition. The incised gravestone and the long-cist burials are thought to indicate Early Christian activity in the area in the 5th and 6th century. In Scotland, early gravestones are found only in the Borders, the Lothians and in Galloway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
