Scope and Content Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Holyrood Palace lies below Salisbury Crags and today it is the Edinburgh home of the Royal Family. Its origins lie in the 12th-century Abbey founded by David I, but it has been rebuilt and remodelled on many occasions. The Palace is particularly associated with Mary Queen of Scots, but it was used by many Scottish monarchs, as well as the Prince Charles Edward Stewart (Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie) in 1745. In the 19th century, Queen Victoria restored the Palace to its former glory. Work in the 19th century also included the laying out of the Parade Ground, and drainage and landscaping work throughout Holyrood Park according to plans drawn up by Prince Albert. At this time the main road through the Park, the Queen's Drive, was built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
