Scope and Content Hunter's Bog, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh In the 1830s the garrison from the Castle set up targets in Hunter's Bog to use it for rifle practice. Volunteer's Walk, which runs up the Bog takes its name from this time. By 1877 there were eight firing lines running down the Bog. Originally firing took place along the floor of the valley, but there were complaints from the residents of Newington; the range was then realigned with the targets positioned on Arthur's Seat. In the 1950s the ranges went out of use by the army but they continued to be used by the Edinburgh Rifles Club until 1961. The ranges incorporated various pavilions and their remains may be seen, in low light, on the backslope of Salisbury Crags. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
