Description Mertoun Mill View from SW

Date 9/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 427660

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Mertoun Mill, Berwickshire This mill is a typical large Borders water-powered grain mill, three storeys high with a hipped roof. This view shows the mill from the south west. It drew its water for power from the Tweed. The cottages were for the millers. The mill is on an L-plan, with the kiln in the wing facing the river. The large scale of this building reflects the importance of grain growing in the surrounding countryside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
