Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Wooden, by Kelso, Roxburghshire This very modest and altered structure is nevertheless a relic of the earliest days of suspension bridge building in Scotland. Its hook-and-eye chains are the most primitive type of blacksmith-made suspension chains of c1820. This is a general view of the bridge, showing the steel girder pylons, probably replacing earlier wooden ones. This little bridge was probably intended mainly for use by fishernen. It is possible that the chains were second-hand, but they may well have been made in emulation of those on better-known pioneering suspension bridges. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
