Galashiels, Buckholm Mill View from NW

SC 426197

Description Galashiels, Buckholm Mill View from NW

Date 7/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 426197

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Buckholm Mill, Galashiels, Selkirkshire Built as a water-powered spinning mill in 1846 for Henry Sanderson, and a very large mill for its time. This view shows the five-storey mill from the river. The lade taking water to the mill ran partly in tunnel. The outlet for the tailrace is behind the tree in the centre. As can be seen the need for a good site for water power meant that the mill took up all the available land in the valley bottom, so it was not extended. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
