Scope and Content Stone circle at Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute J G Scott's excavations (1974-9) explored the whole Temple Wood site. Within the previously-recorded main circle Scott found a number of burials. In his final season he uncovered a smaller and earlier circle to the north-east. Only two stone uprights remain of the north-eastern circle. Excavation showed the earliest phase to be a circle of timber posts arranged around a central post, subsequently replaced by a small, elliptical stone circle. At least five stones were erected. This is one of a series of impressive prehistoric monuments situated in the Kilmartin Valley. Built for burial or ritual purposes they would have provided a focus for the whole community.
