Scope and Content Geological origins, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh The summit of Arthur's Seat towers above the city of Edinburgh. It was originally formed 350 million years ago when a huge volcano arose out of a tropical sea and erupted, sending clouds of ash and lava over the surrounding islands. Pockets of the original lava may be seen on Whinny Hill and Crow Hill. Millennia later, when the original volcano was dormant, other eruptions resulted in the formation of Salisbury Crags. In more recent times the whole hill has been tipped sideways by earth movements. Finally, during the Ice Age, the west-facing crags were eroded out and the east-facing slopes were enhanced by sediments to give the Park its present imposing form.
