Scope and Content Aerial view of Crossraguel Abbey, Strathclyde The remains of Crossraguel Abbey lie c.2.5km south-west of Maybole. It was founded c.1244 by Duncan, Earl of Carrick for a community of Cluniac monks from Paisley Abbey. Most of what remains dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. This aerial view shows the layout of the abbey. The 14th- and 15th-century church (bottom) adjoins the chapter house and warming room to enclose a cloister for private meditation. On the far right of the site is the entrance gatehouse, and dovecot. At the top of the site are the remains of a series of houses for some of the retired monks. On the far left stands the tower-house which was built c.1530 as Abbot William Kennedy's residence. The abbey is now in the care of Historic Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
