Scope and Content Aerial view of Kinloss Abbey, Grampian The remains of Kinloss Abbey lie c.3.5km north-east of Forres, just outside the village of Kinloss, now dominated by an RAF base. Dedicated to St Mary, the abbey was founded in 1150-1 by David I for a community of Cistercian monks from Melrose Abbey. This aerial view shows the remains within the surrounding 18th-century (and later) burial-ground. The abbot's house with its circular stair tower (right) was erected in 1537 during the abbacy of Robert Reid (1528-49), who later became Bishop of Orkney. After the Reformation (1560) and the dissolution of the monasteries, the Brodies of Lethen took over ownership of the abbey in 1601, and in 1651, much of the stone was sold for the building of Inverness Castle and fort by Oliver Cromwell.
