Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32485. Plan showing the first floor of Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. The interior was extensively remodelled in the late 14th or early 15th century. The original entrance into the tower was here on the first floor, later becoming a window in the east wall during the remodelling work. A new great hall with a pointed barrel vault was also inserted, the walls being thickened to support the extra weight. In 1587 Torthorwald was acquired by the Douglases though marriage, who retained possession of the castle until around 1890. The tower was last occupied in the around 1630, though by the end of the 17th century it lay abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
