Scope and Content Plan showing Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. The interior was extensively remodelled in the late 14th or early 15th century. Ploughing and quarrying have badly damaged the tower's earthworks. Buildings of a later farmstead lie immediately to the north of the ruined tower. The earthworks on the north-east are probably remains of the bailey's defences. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Anglo-Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of feudal lordship, as well as being fortified residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
