Scope and Content Carved fragment of stone, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This rectangular slab of stone is in the Abbey Museum. It comprises a central slot with a decorative panel on either side. These consist of rectangle defined by slight rolls. The rest of the stone has been smoothed. This stone was first identified in a stone-pile at the Abbey in 1977. The slot down the centre may have been intended to hold a wooden screen.
