Description Detail on top floor of no. 1 shaft tower showing (right to left) the exciter, electronic motor, gearbox and cable drum of the 1B winder. Each of the two winders is equipped with 14-tonne skips, and are together designed to lift 430 tonnes of coal per hour. The counterweights have rope guides.

Scope and Content Winder, Number 1 Winding Tower, Monkton Hall Colliery, Midlothian Monkton Hall Colliery was sunk in 1954-67 and was one of the National Coal Board's five Scottish super-pits. Coal production reached 5,000 tons per day in 1968. Most of the output went to Cockenzie Power Station. It was closed in 1997 and then demolished. This is one of the two electric winders at the top of Number 1 Winding Tower used to haul up to 430 tons of coal to the surface every hour in 14-ton skips. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
