Scope and Content Socket-stone from MacLean's Cross, on Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This drawing shows the socket-stone from the base of MacLean's Cross. It comprises a simple, roughly rectangular slab with a rectangular hole in the centre. The rest of the base comprises a rectangular pedestal of rubble. These bases were used to support free-standing crosses. Some are formed from a series of stone slabs, whilst others have been carved from single large blocks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
