Scope and Content Socket-stone for free-standing cross, on Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This drawing shows the roughly rectangular base of a free-standing cross. The upper surface is convex, and it has a moulded border around the outer edge. The socket in the centre of the slab also has a raised margin. These bases were used to support free-standing crosses. Some are formed from a series of stone slabs, whilst others have been carved from single large blocks. The stone is in the Abbey Museum (No 94). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
