Scope and Content Stone circle at Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute J G Scott's excavations (1974-9) explored the Temple Wood site. Within the previously recorded main circle Scott found a number of burials. In his final season he uncovered a smaller, earlier circle to the north-east. During excavation, two stones of the main circle were found to bear pecked designs. It is not known whether this stone has been reused or if the design, a double spiral, was added during construction of the circle. This is one of a series of impressive prehistoric monuments situated in the Kilmartin Valley. Built for burial and ritual purposes they would have provided a focus for the whole community.
