Scope and Content View from west showing Iona Nunnery, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba, who came over from Ireland around 563AD. The Irish church continued until the monastery became part of the Benedictine order around 1200. A priory of Augustinian canonesses was also established on the island around 1200 by Reginald son of Somerled. Alterations and additions were made in the late 15th and early 16th centuries but it was ruinous by the 17th century. This shows the remains of the nunnery, which were consolidated in the early 20th century. Under the care of the Iona Cathedral Trust, the north chapel and sacristy (left) were restored in 1917-23, along with the laying out of a garden in the cloister.
