Scope and Content Hoddom old parish church and possible monastery, Dumfries and Galloway Traditionally associated with St Kentigern, Hoddom became the site of a major Anglian monastery during the 8th century AD, and continued as a monastic centre until the 13th century. Around 1212, the community may have been moved to Glasgow. An aerial view effectively shows the area of the Anglian monastery at Hoddom. A curving cropmark in the upper field (top of this image) represents the monastic vallum and presumably joins up with the linear cropmark to the right of the church. Recent excavation work at Hoddom revealed a number of stone buildings, such as a stone baptistry built with masonry from the nearby Roman fort at Birrens, a malthouse or corn-drying kiln, as well as evidence of industrial activity, such as smithing.
