Scope and Content North transept at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. Within the E wall, at first-floor level, is a passage which runs through to the N wall of the choir. This 15th-century doorway gives access to the choir itself. The lintel, seen here, is supported by two simple capitals with roll mouldings on them. The N transept is one of the oldest parts of the church still standing. Along with short sections of the N wall of the nave and choir, it belongs to the original Benedictine abbey from around 1200 AD. It was restored between 1902 and 1904.
