Scope and Content Torthorwald Castle, Dumfriesshire Torthorwald is a large, rapidly decaying tower-house, probably of early 14th century origin. Tower-houses were very popular in Scotland among the landowning classes from the 14th to the 17th centuries. They combined security with domestic convenience. These are the ruins of Torthorwald Castle. It may have been built soon after 1321, when Humphrey de Kirkpatrick was granted the lands and barony of Torthorwald. In the 15th century the castle was heightened and extended. The castle stands on a small hill which is surrounded by an artificial ditch and rampart, possibly forming part of earlier defences.
